    The Planets & Ascendant

The Ascendant (Rising): Your rising sign is your perspective. Your approach to new people and situations, how you view the world and how you interact within it. From your point of view, it’s how you assess a situation from an outsider’s perspective, and how you work within it if you decide to dive in. It also represents the way you SEE the world, whether you see it as a harmful place that you need to act cautiously in, or as a place to flourish and grow in, making all sorts of connections and having adventures. It tells you about YOUR perspective. Since it tells you about the way you work in the world, it also tells you how you can come off to others based on a first impression. Your Rising sign can give very clear hints about your physical appearance as well, since it marks the beginning of the 1st house, the house of the physical being.

The Sun: The sun is the acting part of you. Almost everyone knows their sun sign. The sun represents the broad outline and major theme of who you are. It represents your ego, your identity, your creative expression and self expression. It tells you how you view yourself and where you find yourself. It can give you major hints about what specifically you need to do or how you need to express yourself to feel the most like yourself. If you don’t express the things associated with your sun placement, you’ll likely question who you are and what your purpose is, and go searching for that until you find it. If you’re not allowed to express yourself in these ways, your confidence and ego will suffer and you’ll probably feel like you’ve lost touch of yourself.

The Moon: The Moon is the feeling part of you. Since the sun represents your outer expression, the moon represents your inner expression. The moon is your feelings, your reactions and emotional expression, your nurturing side, who and what you hold onto dearly. Your moon placement tells you what is lying beneath the surface of the parts of you that everyone else sees. Of course, people may still see your soft underside, but it usually isn’t as immediate and obvious as your sun and rising. Your moon sign shows itself when you react to things, it’s usually your immediate reaction before you’ve had time to chew things over and process something. It tells how you express your feelings, whether you’re very blunt and straightforward about them, or if you tend to hide them until you finally snap and can’t help but release everything all at once. It tells how you nurture others too, a loved one who’s gone through something and needs comforting or words of wisdom, or anything of that sort.

Mercury: Mercury is the thinking and rational part of you. While the moon feels and usually reacts immediately, Mercury processes things with logic. Mercury represents your mind, your thought processes, your communication skills and habits, how you learn and how you share information with others. If you’ve spoken a single sentence with someone, you’ve witnessed their Mercury placement at work. It tells whether you think absolutely objectively with fairness on your mind, or if you tend to kind of hold back from being blunt to avoid upsetting people or sounding mean. It can tell you what learning and teaching style you’re most comfortable with, the tone you tend to use when explaining things, and even what your handwriting looks like or what your voice sounds like.

Venus: Venus is the social and loving part of you. While Mercury tells you how you communicate, Venus tells you how you actually socialize and interact with people. It can tell you what your social skills and social habits are like, whether you’re very open and friendly, or kind of guarded and reserved at times. Whether you’re a social butterfly or you’d rather stay at home watching movies with your one favorite person. It tells you the kind of friends you look for, how you handle those friendships, and it tells you what kind of people are drawn to you. This also goes for romantic relationships. Venus tells you the kind of partner you are, and the kind of partner you want. It tells you how you show your love and affection, and how you need to receive love and affection to feel valued. Venus also tells you about the things you value, things like your sense of style, your taste in decor, clothing, hairstyles, food, drinks, etc. Venus is also often associated with money and finances.

Mars: Mars is the driven and motivated you. While Venus is all about grace and beautiful things, Mars is all about action and your intense emotions that cause you to act on them. Mars tells you about your drive, what drives you, the things that you want and how you go about getting them. Mars also tells you about how you act when you’re angry, if you like to take revenge, if you lash out at people, or if you bottle it in and act passive-aggressively. Since Mars gives hints about your intense emotions and actions, it also tells you about your physical needs. This means your sex drive, but also if you like to release your anger and tension by working out, running, etc.

Jupiter: Jupiter is the seeking and expansive you. As the largest planet in the solar system, Jupiter deals with everything BIG. It represents the search for the larger things in life, like education, philosophy, purpose of life, etc. Jupiter shifts the focus from your physical being to what’s going on outside of your own personal little bubble. Jupiter gives you the curiosity to ponder what’s really out there and if there’s a deeper meaning to things. Jupiter also represents luck and fortune. Jupiter in your chart tells you how and what you’re really lucky about without any obvious reason to be lucky with those things. Jupiter also has to do with your sense of justice, fairness and freedom. Jupiter pushes you beyond your comfort zone to explore and grow on a personal level.

Saturn: Saturn is the calculating and hard working part of you. While Jupiter wants you to be free and to grow, Saturn wants you to be cautious and self-disciplined. Saturn represents restrictions, limitations, authority, and hard work. It tells you how you handle being under an authority figure, and how you handle the responsibility of BEING an authority figure. It tells you how responsible and realistic you are. Saturn also tells you what you have to extra work hard for in order to see positive results. Saturn doesn’t hand anything over easily like Jupiter might, it doesn’t deal with luck, Saturn wants you to EARN what you get. Saturn also represents wisdom earned from hard lessons, and karma, taking responsibility for your own actions.

Uranus: Uranus is the rebellious, independent part of you. While Saturn tells you to buckle down and be responsible, Uranus tells you to stick it to the man. Uranus gives you the need to be independent, to be separate from the majority of people who blindly follow tradition just because “it’s the way things have always been done”. Uranus destroys the system and builds up a new and even better system. It gives you your rebellious streak, the ability to be full of surprises and to do the unexpected. It gives you genius ideas to invent and innovate. Uranus is the “aha” moment, and it’s the “suddenly, everything changed” moment.

Neptune: Neptune is the interconnected and empathizing part of you. While Uranus tells you to do your own thing and ditch the bandwagon, Neptune tells you to be one with people and get in touch with the collective. Neptune is all about dreams, intuition, illusions, visions, and spirituality. It reaches for things invisible to the eye yet completely surrounds us. It blurs the lines between what’s only YOU and what’s only ME, so that we can be an US. It drives you to be receptive to others’ troubles so that you can comfort and possibly heal them.

Pluto: Pluto is the part of you that wants control and power. Pluto hits you and the world HARD, and it gives you the drive to use your own abilities to hit the world just as hard. It represents your need to influence the world and people, to have a handle and control of things. Pluto is intensity and passion, but on a larger scale than Mars. Pluto represents authority, but on a large scale such as politicians and monarchs. Pluto gives you the power to tear things apart, destroy them, to rebuild from a clean slate. It’s death and rebirth, transformation. Pluto also has to do with obsession and extremes. Pluto doesn’t tweak things here and there, it causes complete upheaval and revolution.
